Promoting healthy lifestyles and fun for families the YMCA, West Nebraska Community College, Douglas Kelly and Ostdiek and Regional West Medical Center will host a “Y not Ride” event June 11.
The committee was looking to do something for children and adults and believed the bike ride would be a great way to involve both.
“At the Y we have had a couple of rides including the Tour de Rock that was very popular,” said Lola Gonzales, fitness director for the YMCA. “People would always ask why not have a ride for kids, so this year we are going to with our other sponsors.”
The scenic rides include four routes, two for adults and two for families. The family rides are two miles and nine miles. The adult rides include a 26-mile and 69-mile ride; all four rides will start at the YMCA in the morning.
Dr. Todd Holcomb, president of WNCC, said the ride will offer something different than a walk or run that are very popular events in for the area.
“This event will emphasis families, exercising and being active together,” he said.
Holcomb came up with the idea after participating in the Oregon Trail Monument Ride. A couple of children had wanted to participate in the ride, but didn’t have helmets. Holcomb and another rider rode with the two so that they could participate.
“It made me think that with a little encouragement more kids would be out riding,” he said. “It was important for me to get involved in this ride.”
Douglas Kelly and Ostdiek, attorneys, will donate children’s helmets to the first 50 children that sign up.
“The event is really for families to get out and have fun,” said Gonzales. “We hope to have it become an annual event.”
Cost is $5 for the family ride and a maximum of $15 per family, $10 for adult ride and a maximum of $30 per family. To ensure a t-shirt, register by June 3.
